The Building Hope Foundation
NATIONAL PROGRAMS
The KIDS KOTTAGE provides temporary care for Washoe County’s abused and neglected children until they can safely be returned to their families or placed in a foster home. For the second year, in the fall of 2016, (2016-17 school year) we are continuing to provide free-of-charge movement classes and activities for the children residing in the Kid’s Kottage. Every Wednesday, Barbara Land and three dance professionals from the Nevada Building Hope Foundation conduct a weekly one hour creative movement dance class. In 2015-16 our targeted age group were children between 3 to 9 years of age. At this time, our targeted age group is between 3 and 10 years of age. We currently service 10 to 18 children weekly in our class often comprising of different children each week depending on the number of children in-residence at the Kottage. To date, we have serviced approximately 360 children in our Kid’s Kottage Program.
According to Kid’s Kottage Director, Bert Wells, our program has become a staple and one of the most popular activities offered at the Kottage. In June 2016, Barbara Land was asked to present to arts educators and leaders attending the Nevada Arts Council “Arts for the Heart Conference,” her strategies in developing the successful dance program at the Kid’s Kottage. NBHF also, for the second year, have secured free-of-charge tickets for 15 students of the Kid’s Kottage to attend the local performance of the Nutcracker Ballet.
The MARVIN PICOLLO SCHOOL is a special education school within the Washoe County School District. The school serves 122 students in grades PK-12. The school provides special services for children with disabilities (special physical, mental, or learning needs.) In 2016-17 we will continue our work conducting movement programs and performances at the Marvin Picollo School. On December 2, 2016 we will again present at the Picollo School “Christmas at Picollo,” this will be a dance performance by members of the Conservatory Dance Theater, the performing arm of the Nevada Building Hope Foundation. Barbara Land has been directing the Christmas Event at Picollo for the past 15 years.
The VETERAN'S HOSPITAL is our newest outreach community. On December 1, 2016, members of the Conservatory Dance Theater will perform a Christmas Dance concert for our local Veteran’s living in permanent long-term care. We have scheduled performances for both Christmas and spring annually.
The CONSERVATORY DANCE THEATER (CDT) is the performing arm of the Nevada Building Hope Foundation. This group of dancers consist of pre-professional ballet students from the Conservatory of Movement, a professional ballet school in Reno, Nevada. Unlike other performing dance groups, CDT will focus solely on outreach dance performances such as listed above.
• In 2016, Abbie Tate, a dancer from CDT travelled to Iquitos, Peru with Director, Barbara Land, to help struggling dance teachers and students of classical ballet, in instructing the correct theory and methodologies of classical ballet.
•In December 2015, Barbara Land, choreographed with the members of CDT in Reno, Nevada, the Waltz of the Snow Flakes, the Snow Adagio, and the Dance of the Sugar Plumb Fairy from the Nutcracker Ballet. These dance works were then video recorded and retaught to the Peruvian dance students in Iquitos. These dances will be performed in December2016 in Loreto Dance’s second annual performance of the Nutcracker Ballet.
•Beginning in 2014, Barbara Land began working with Escuela Danse Art (Sorella Melina Salazar Braga, director) in which she began a Royal Academy Dance Program. In 2017, will mark the third year for this land mark program with the students now studying, Pre-primary, Primary, Grade One and Grade Ballet of the Royal Academy of Dancing Syllabus.
